Skating Academy FAQ
- Q: What does my child need to wear?
A: If the child is between 3 and 5, they should start with Tot 1. If the child is 6 or over and wants to figure skate, they should start with Pre-Alpha. If the child is 6 or over and wants to hockey skate, they should start with Hockey 1.
- Q: How long are the classes?
A: Each class is 30 minutes long.
- Q: Are skates provided?
A: Absolutely! Rental skates are provided with the class
- Q: How do I register?
A: Online registration will always be located to the right of any article regarding the skating academy or you can visit in person and sign-up at the front desk.
- Q: What should my child wear for class?
A: Children are encouraged to wear a bike or hockey helmet if they are under 7. We also recommend warm clothes and gloves or mittens and socks.
- Q: What happens if we miss a class?
A: Make-ups can be made during that semester, on any other day that the class is offered.
- Q: Is full gear required for the hockey calsses?
A: No, full gear is not required. No sticks will be used in Skating Academy Classes.
Skating Academy Class Descriptions
Figure skating
- Pre-Alpha (Skaters 6 and up)
Beginners with no previous instruction learn proper falling and getting up, two-‐foot glides, one-‐foot glides, forward swizzles, backward wiggles, and proper pushes. May begin more advanced elements as class progresses.
- Alpha
Students who have passed Pre-‐Alpha will learn forward stroking, forward pumps, forward crossovers, backward swizzles, and snowplow stop. May begin more advanced elements as class progresses.
- Beta (includes ISI Testing)
Students who have passed Alpha will learn backward pumps, backward stroking, backward crossovers, t-‐ stops and two foot turns. May begin more advanced elements as class progresses.
- Gamma (includes ISI Testing)
Students who have passed Beta will learn outside three turns, 7 step Mohawk combinations, and a hockey stop. May begin more advanced elements as class progresses.
- Delta/ FS 1
Students who have passed Gamma will learn inside three turns, advanced forward outside and inside edges, lunge, shoot the duck, and backward two-‐foot turns. May begin more advanced elements as class progresses. This is our package that includes programs for competitions.
- Competitor's Club (Skates Required)
Your days of looking for a private lesson instructor are over! Competitor’s Club Members get access to group training sessions with a multitude of qualified trainers. Our instructors will cut and choreograph your child’s program for free once you join the NYTEX Competitor’s Club whether you decide to compete or not. This is our package that includes programs for competition.
Learn to Skate
- Tot 1
Beginners with no previous instruction. Learn proper falling and getting up, march in place, march walking, march then glide, and dip while moving. May also begin more advanced elements as class progresses.
- Tot 2
Students who have passed Tot 1 will learn forward swizzles, hop in place, curves, backward wiggles, and toe pushes. May also begin more advanced elements as class progresses.
- Tot 3
Students who have passed Tot 1 and 2 will learn blade pushes, 1 foot glides, snowplow stops, and backward swizzles. May also begin more advanced elements as class progresses.
- Mini Mite Hockey
Mini Mites is the first time your child can learn hockey concepts in the American Development Model of half ice training. For players 7 and under that are proficient in hockey 1 skills. Hockey 2 and 3 can be taken in conjunction with Mini-Mites.

Hockey
- Hockey 1
Beginners with no previous instruction. Learn I foot glides, 2 foot glides, forward swizzles, backward swizzles, backward wiggles, and 1 foot snowplow stops. May begin more advanced skills as class progresses.
- Hockey 2
Students who have passed hockey 1 learn pivots (hockey turns) and forward crossovers. Will also begin to learn backward C-‐cuts, hockey stops and backward crossovers.
- Hockey 3
Students who have passed hockey 2 learn Mohawks, backward crossovers, hockey stops, hockey starts, backward stops, backward C-‐cuts, forward edges and backward edges.
- Hockey Skills (Should be proficient in Hockey 2 Skills)
Learn everything you need to know to skate in one of NYTEX's youth ice hockey leagues. Advance to a house league and compete in local games.
- House Leagues (8 and up)
